About the tour
The «STAN» Grand Tour
One route through all five countries of Central Asia: Ashgabat and the Darvaza «Gateway to Hell», ancient Merv and Kunya-Urgench, Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand, the mountains of Tajikistan and Lake Iskanderkul, Bishkek, Almaty and Astana. In the 15th century Tamerlane sent treasure from India to build a mosque in Samarkand — most of it vanished on the way. This route follows that story.
- Follow in the footsteps of Tamerlane, the 15th-century conqueror.
- 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Nisa, Merv, Kunya-Urgench, Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Sarazm.
- The Darvaza gas crater — the «Gateway to Hell» — has burned for more than 50 years.
- Legendary cities: Ashgabat, Nukus, Bukhara, Samarkand, Tashkent, Almaty, Astana.
- Landscapes: Lake Iskanderkul and Lake Issyk-Kul, the Pamir and Tien Shan mountains.
- The ancient culture and hospitality of five Central Asian peoples.
The government of Turkmenistan plans to extinguish the Darvaza crater. No date has been announced; the programme may change if work begins.
