SamarkandThe showpiece of the Silk Road: the Registan, the blue domes of Shah-i-Zinda, Timur’s mausoleum and a bazaar that has traded for centuries.
BukharaA living old town: the Kalyan minaret, the Ark fortress, trading domes and Lyabi-Hauz, all within walking distance of each other.
KhivaItchan Kala, a whole walled town of minarets and madrasahs, small enough to cross in twenty minutes and best at sunset.
