Uzbekistan in September: weather, events and travel tips

Places in this article: Samarkand · Bukhara · Khiva · Tashkent

In August an average afternoon in Bukhara reaches 36 °C. In September it is 30 °C, and by the end of the month the old town is pleasant to walk even at noon. Over those four weeks the country goes from summer to the start of autumn: the first cotton fields turn white, the mountain trails dry out, and in 2027 Bukhara opens a contemporary art biennial in its madrasahs and caravanserais.

We live in Tashkent and take guests around Uzbekistan all year. September is high season, and the reason is simple: it is warm, dry and long-lit. Here is what the month looks like city by city, and what we book first.

Weather in Uzbekistan in September

Average afternoon highs and night lows from the climate normals for 1991–2020, the same data we use everywhere on the site. Khiva's figures come from the Urgench weather station, 35 km away.

CityDayNightRain in the month
Tashkent30 °C13 °C5 mm
Samarkand29 °C14 °C3 mm
Bukhara30 °C14 °C1 mm
Khiva28 °C12 °C2 mm

September is the driest month of the season: a few millimetres of rain in the whole month, and in Bukhara about one. The averages hide a steady slide. August afternoons are around 33–36 °C, October ones around 22 °C, so the first days of September are still summer and the last ones already feel like autumn.

Nights cool down fast, to 12–14 °C. A sunny 30 °C afternoon in Khiva becomes a night you will want a sweater for.

Daylight in September

All of Uzbekistan is on UTC+5, with no summer time. In the west, in Khiva, the sun rises and sets about 35 minutes later than in Tashkent.

  • Tashkent, 1 September: sunrise 05:48, sunset 18:59, about 13 hours 10 minutes of daylight.
  • Tashkent, 30 September: sunrise 06:17, sunset 18:09, just under 12 hours.
  • Khiva, the same dates: sunrise 06:23 and 06:53, sunset 19:34 and 18:45.

The fast train leaves Tashkent for Khiva at 07:00 every day except Sunday and arrives at about 14:30. In early September you have five hours of light inside the walls; at the end of the month, a little over four. The details are in our guide to trains in Uzbekistan.

Events in September 2027

1 September is Independence Day, the country's main public holiday, marking independence in 1991.

Two days later, on 3 September 2027, the second Bukhara Biennial opens. This festival of contemporary art runs until 21 November 2027 and places its works in restored buildings of the old town, some of which open to the public for the first time. September is the warm, bright start of it, with 30 °C afternoons. What else is fixed for the year is in our festival calendar for 2027.

For a biennial weekend without a full tour, Bukhara in 2 days goes there and back from Tashkent by night train, and our Bukhara highlights tour covers the monuments in a morning.

The cotton harvest begins

The harvest starts in the far south at the end of August and moves north; by mid-September it is open across the country. From then until the end of October we can arrange a visit to a working field near Bukhara, on request and with the farmer's agreement. Wear closed shoes and a hat: September afternoons in the fields are still hot. How a visit works, and what you will see, is in our guide to the cotton season in Uzbekistan.

Walking in September

September is one of the best months for the mountains. At , an hour and a half from Tashkent, the average afternoon is 21 °C and the night 11 °C, and the whole month brings only about 17 mm of rain, against some 120 mm in May. The paths are dry and the views long.

Routes, difficulty and where you sleep are in our guide to hiking in Uzbekistan.

Crowds and booking

September belongs to the high season, together with April, May and October. Morning trains and hotels near the old towns of Samarkand and Bukhara go first. Train tickets go on sale 60 days before departure, so for mid-September the sale opens in mid-July, and we buy on the first days. In 2027 the biennial adds more visitors to Bukhara, so book your nights there early.

Routes that work well in September:

If your dates can move a few weeks later, compare with Uzbekistan in October: cooler, with the cotton harvest at its height.

What to pack for September

  • Closed shoes that are good for long walks and for a dusty cotton field.
  • A scarf for religious sites (see what to wear and etiquette), and a card plus some cash for bazaars (see cards, cash and tipping).

In short

  • September is warm and dry: 28–30 °C in the afternoon, 12–14 °C at night, almost no rain.
  • Daylight shrinks from about 13 to 12 hours; in Khiva the sun sets about 35 minutes later than in Tashkent.
