Uzbekistan in October: weather, cotton harvest and tips
Places in this article: Samarkand · Bukhara · Khiva · Tashkent
On 1 October the sun sets over Tashkent at 18:07. On 31 October it goes down at 17:22, three quarters of an hour earlier. In between is what we think is the most comfortable month of the year for long walking days: afternoons in the low twenties, almost no rain, and white cotton fields along the road to Bukhara.
We live in Tashkent and take guests around the country all year. October is high season, so it is busy and needs planning ahead, but it gives you weather that lets you stay outdoors from morning to sunset. Here is what to expect, city by city.
Weather in Uzbekistan in October
Average daytime highs and night lows from the long-term climate normals (1991–2020), the same figures we use across this site. Khiva's numbers come from the weather station in Urgench, 35 km away.
| City | Day | Night | Rain in the month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tashkent | 22 °C | 8 °C | 24 mm |
| Samarkand | 22 °C | 8 °C | 16 mm |
| Bukhara | 23 °C | 7 °C | 3 mm |
| Khiva | 20 °C | 5 °C | 6 mm |
These are averages for the whole month. September averages about 29 °C in the afternoon and November about 13 °C, so the first week of October still feels like late summer and the last one like autumn. The gap between day and night is wide: in Bukhara a 23 °C afternoon turns into a 7 °C night. Rain is rare everywhere, and Bukhara gets about 3 mm in the whole month. Khiva is the coolest of the four cities, so pack a warm layer for the evenings there.

At the start of October that leaves you about four hours of daylight inside the walls, at the end of the month about three and a half. Times and days are in our guide to trains in Uzbekistan.

Cotton harvest and autumn colours
October is one of the two main months of the cotton harvest. The fields look dusted with snow, and you see them from the train and from the road to Bukhara and Khiva. We arrange field visits from Bukhara from mid-September to the end of October; how it works is in our guide to the cotton season in Uzbekistan.
At the end of the month the streets and parks of Tashkent turn red, orange and yellow, and the city goes out to walk and take photos.
