Samarkand non is now a registered trademark
The round flatbread that travellers carry home from Samarkand has one more layer of protection. In October 2026 Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Justice registered “Samarkand non” as a trademark, with a certificate valid for ten years. The ministry called it a recognition of the bread’s identity and an important step in preserving the country’s food heritage.
What it means
Since February 2025 the name has also been registered as a geographical indication. Under Uzbekistan’s 2022 law on geographical indications, such a name may only be used by producers in the named place, where at least one stage of production that shapes the product’s qualities must take place. Put simply, Samarkand non should come from Samarkand.
For your trip
In Samarkand the bread is sold every morning at the Siab Bazaar next to the Bibi-Khanym mosque, and it keeps well enough to take home. Our guide to the bazaars of Uzbekistan explains what else to buy, and our walking tour of Samarkand with a guide can include the bazaar.
