Uzbekistan on your own or with a local operator: an honest comparison
Places in this article: Samarkand · Bukhara · Khiva · Tashkent
Almost everything a trip to Uzbekistan needs in 2026 can be booked from a phone: the train on eticket.railway.uz, the taxi in Yandex Go, the hotel online and, for many passports, no Entry rules depend on your passport. Once you are here, each stay must be registered within three days, and hotels do it for you; customs and registration rules are in our guide. Read more → at all. We are a tour operator in Tashkent, and we will say it plainly: plenty of travellers manage very well without us. Here is what is easy on your own, where independent trips usually get stuck, and what we take on if you would rather hand part of it over.
Travelling Uzbekistan on your own: what is easy in 2026
Entry. Citizens of the EU, the UK and many other countries enter visa-free for up to 30 days, and since 1 January 2026 so do citizens of the United States. Most others apply for an e-visa on the official portal, e-visa.gov.uz. The rule depends on your passport; our visa guide has the details.
Trains. Tickets are sold on eticket.railway.uz and in the Uzrailway tickets app, 60 days before departure. Uzbekistan's high-speed train: Tashkent to Samarkand in 2 hours 30 minutes, Tashkent to Bukhara in about 4 hours. Tickets are tied to your passport. Read more → takes you from Tashkent to Samarkand in 2 hours 30 minutes and to Bukhara in about 4 hours. Classes, stations and boarding are covered in our guide to trains.
Taxis. In the cities Yandex Go shows the price before the ride, and since 2024 it also works in Urgench and Khiva.
Money. Visa and Mastercard work at almost every card terminal. Cash is for bazaars, street vendors and some taxis. More in cards, cash and tipping.
Safety. The old quarters of Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara are fine to walk in the evening; the usual problem is pickpockets in crowds. See safety and health.
Phone. Roaming and travel eSIMs need no IMEI registration, and a local SIM on your passport gives you 60 days before it is required, so a two-week trip needs nothing. See IMEI registration.
Hotels. Most can be booked online, and the hotel registers you at check-in. See where to stay.
Ready-made routes for a trip on your own: 7 days, 10 days and 14 days. For costs, see the one-week budget; for timing, seasons and weather.

Where independent travellers usually struggle
None of this will spoil a trip. These are simply the places where we most often see plans change.
Train tickets in high season
Afrosiyob and the Khiva train sell out, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. The high-speed train to Khiva leaves Tashkent at 07:00 every day except Sunday and arrives at about 14:30; it leaves Khiva at 07:15 or 07:20 every day except Monday. A route that needs Khiva on a Sunday or a Monday has to be rebuilt around those days.
Registration when you stay privately
Every visitor is registered within 3 days of arrival, weekends included. Hotels do it at check-in and include the tourist tax in the bill; in a private flat the host registers you and pays it. In a tent or camper van you register yourself at emehmon.uz, and the tax can be paid only with a debit card from an Uzbek bank. Keep every confirmation until passport control; see registration and customs.
A guide in your language
Guides in Uzbekistan work with a certificate issued by the state tourism committee. Finding a certified guide who speaks your language, for each city and each date, means separate arrangements in Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, usually made from abroad.
Museum days off
They differ from museum to museum. The The Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art in Nukus, named after Igor Savitsky, who gathered a large collection of Russian avant-garde art there in Soviet times. in Nukus is closed on Mondays, while the Did you know? Ulugh Beg measured the year to within 25 seconds Working at his Samarkand observatory, Ulugh Beg put the tropical year at 365 days 5 h 49 min 15 s, about 25 seconds too long, closer than Copernicus a century later. Read more → museum in Samarkand opens every day. Check the hours of each museum on your list before you build a day around it.
Long roads and night arrivals
The road from Khiva to Bukhara crosses the The Kyzylkum, or Red Sands: the desert between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers that the road and the railway cross on the way to Khiva. Desert: about 490 km and 7–8 hours by car. Arrange a car and driver in advance, or take the train. If your flight lands at night or at dawn, hotel check-in is usually from 14:00 and early check-in costs extra; to sleep on arrival, book the room from the night before. See flights to Uzbekistan.
Language beyond the centre
Uzbek is the state language, and Russian is widely used across the country. Outside hotels and the old towns, a translation app on your phone saves a lot of pointing.
Groups, dinners and events
A dinner for twenty, a gala evening or a conference is a different kind of booking. In Khiva the new A new tourist complex on the shore of Lake Govuk, a short drive from Ichan-Kala, opened in May 2025: 17 hotels and guest houses, a 3,000-seat amphitheatre, restaurants, a bazaar under domes and a canal with gondolas. What we take on, if you would rather not deal with it
Nothing on the list above needs a tour operator. If you prefer to hand some of it over, this is what we do, as set out on our How we work page.
- A plan within 24 hours. You send dates, group size and interests; we send a day-by-day itinerary with the hotels named and every line itemised. Revisions are free, and there is no account to create and no payment to start.
- The whole trip in one place. Hotels, transfers, guides, meals, activities, flights, visas and insurance.
- The middle option. Our 8-day independent tour covers hotels with breakfast, accommodation taxes, airport, hotel and station transfers and the logistics between cities. Excursions and a guide are not included: you choose them yourself or add them. Domestic flight and train tickets are booked as additional services.
- A full private tour. On routes such as the 8-day classic tour, a local guide in your language, entrance tickets, air-conditioned transport and hotel tourist taxes are included.
- Registration. The hotels we book register you at every stop.
- Before you travel. Practical notes: visa steps, what to pack, the weather, meeting points and your guide’s direct contact.

- A contract and an invoice. Payment by bank transfer or secure card, never cash in hand, and only after we confirm your trip.
- Cancellation terms in writing. For tours in Uzbekistan and neighbouring countries: more than 10 days before the start, a full refund or a transfer to another tour; 5–9 days, 50% of the cost is withheld; less than 5 days, 100%. Air and rail tickets are refunded under the carrier’s rules. We may change the order of visits or replace a hotel with an equivalent one, without lowering the quality of services. Who should travel independently
We respect that choice, and for many trips it is the right one. Go on your own if:
- you are comfortable with apps, and a change of plan does not worry you;
- you are visiting one or two cities, for example Tashkent and Samarkand by Afrosiyob;
- you travel slowly and like to choose every hotel yourself.
Handing part of it over usually makes sense when dates are tight, Khiva is on the route in high season, you want a guide in your language in every city, or you are travelling as a group or a company.
In short
- Entry, trains, taxis and payments are straightforward on your own in 2026.
- The weak spots: sold-out Afrosiyob and Khiva trains, the Khiva train days, registration in private stays, guides in your language, museum days off, the long desert road and night arrivals.
- We take on as much or as little as you want, from hotels and transfers in our independent tour to a full private tour with a guide.
- We promise only what is in our documents: licence No. 853484, liability insurance, a reply within 24 hours, itemised prices and the cancellation terms of the public offer.
- If you would like us to look at your route, write to us: planning is free and comes with no obligation.
