Bukhara in October: a doira festival and a month of French culture
October is a lively month on Bukhara’s historic stages. The Kukeldash madrasah at Lyabi-Hauz has hosted Bukhoro doira sadolari, “Sounds of the Bukhara doira”, a festival of the doira, the frame drum that sets the rhythm of Uzbek music. Well-known doira masters played alongside music groups from across the Bukhara region, and the performers received letters of thanks and gifts from the regional administration.
French Culture Month
Since 2 October Bukhara has also been hosting French Culture Month, with concerts, dance, films and talks on heritage conservation by French and Uzbek specialists. Still on the programme:
- 12–17 October: a French film festival with six films, on the open-air square of the Bukhara State Pedagogical Institute.
- Until 31 October: Diana Khamzina’s exhibition “In the Light of Provence and Impressionism” in the harem building of the Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa palace.
- 23–25 October: “Painting Mirror”, wall projections in the historic centre that mix French painting, street art and AI.
- 24 October: clarinettist Christophe Dravers and pianist Pascal Romano in the Kukeldash madrasah.
For your trip
Kukeldash stands on the north side of Lyabi-Hauz, where most evenings in Bukhara begin; our guide to Lyabi-Hauz tells the story of the square, and after a concert you can join our dinner with a local family.
