Tashkent metro to get 14 new five-car trains
The Tashkent metro, famous for its decorated stations, is getting ready for more passengers. On 8 October 2026 the city council approved a plan to buy 14 new five-car trains, 70 cars in all, to replace older trains and add capacity. The work is due to be finished by the end of 2027.
Why now
The metro has four lines, 50 stations and about 70 km of track. It carries more than 800,000 passengers on an average day, and in late September 2026 it set a record of over 1.2 million in a single day. Today’s trains have four cars; the platforms are long enough for five, so every new train will be one car longer. Seven manufacturers from Asia and Europe are being considered.
For your trip
The metro is the quickest way around Tashkent and a sight in itself, with chandeliers, marble and mosaics underground. How to ride it and which stations to see is in our Tashkent metro guide.
