Samarkand: traffic restrictions on 15 streets from 18 to 22 October
If you are in Samarkand this week, allow extra time to get around the centre. From 18 to 22 October 2026 the Road Safety Service will periodically close traffic on 15 city streets while Samarkand hosts large international events. The city is not closed: the restrictions are temporary and come and go during the day.
Which streets
The list includes the streets around the main sights: Registan, Shah-i-Zinda, Afrasiyab, Mirzo Ulugbek, Ibn Sino, Bustonsaroy, University Boulevard, Namozgoh, Sadriddin Ayni, Usta Umar Jurakulov, Beruni, Dagbit, Rudaki, Gulobod and Oydin Yuli. Traffic is diverted to other streets, and vehicles crossing the region in transit get bypass routes. Emergency and operational services are not affected.
What it means for travellers
- Leave more time for transfers to the station and the airport, especially from hotels near the Registan.
- The old centre is compact: between the Registan, Bibi-Khanym, the Siab Bazaar and Shah-i-Zinda it is often faster to walk.
- Follow the instructions of the traffic police on the spot; closures may start at short notice.
- Exact hours were not announced in advance, so check the day before.
If you are travelling with us, your guide and driver plan the day around the closures and adjust the order of the sights if needed; our office is on call 24/7. Planning a visit for later dates? See Samarkand in 1, 2 or 3 days and Samarkand sights: tickets and opening hours.
